Saturday Night Fever 19: 808 State

Taking their name from the Roland TR 808 drum machine and the state-of-mind that they shared, 808 State recorded legendary tracks that Aphex Twin and Autechre cite as being highly influential to their music.

(Yes, that is Björk in the middle). Tonight we have three promo-certified tracks to share. Each one represents 808's style with funky drum-machine grooves, animal sounds, and pungent melodies.

Mongrel - Hit From The Morning Sun ('96 Bulls Remix)

Today really couldn't get much better. I woke up at 8am for my 9am class to find out that classes were canceled! I didn't think city schools would close "due to inclement weather" but hey, I'll take what I can get. Also, we're going to check out TK Webb & the Visions tonight at Webster Hall's Studio.

Aside from all of that, we have a top-notch banger to share.

This one comes fresh from Affinity Music Group's kitchen - a really nice treat for this snowy-turned-rainy Wednesday afternoon. '96 Bulls transforms this pop-rock track from Mongrel into a contender for dance-fest 2k9's remix of the year contest. Hop on it!

Saturday Night Fever 18: Sounderground Records

Sounderground Records is a fairly big label, representing producers as artists and remixers. They've been around since 2006, and we dig their electronic disco-esq vibe.

We have two down-tempo ambient dance tracks for you tonight. The first one is from Germany-based Stefan Tretau, and the second is from Parisian DJ Art Bleek. These two tracks are filled with drum machine goodness and are drenched in glorious reverb. We think they are the perfect jams for jump-starting your Saturday night.

a little bit of some new stuff

Howdy, all. Just got back early this morning from Loren and I's rendez-vous at the Animal Collective show in New York City. More on that experience later.

This evening, I'm a bit more interested in two upcoming 2009 releases (a year which is already shaping up to be above and beyond the disappointment of 2008) ...

First up is indie Rock band The Whitest Boy Alive. While the name leaves quite a lot to be desired, their music is far from lacking. Rules, slated for a March release, is a dreamy collection of groovy pop songs that hone in on some of the finer intricacies of love, friendship, and all that mushy stuff. The band, led by Kings of Convenience front man Erlend Øye, breaks the traditional structure of the genre by occasionally jammin' through a guitar solo or electronic dance break.

Also arriving in March is Technicolor Health by Harlem Shakes, a record so colorful and infectious that it practically spills out of the speakers and buries its way into the back of your head for literally days at a time. It's a bit light and playful, but there's enough depth here to keep you smiling without feeling guilty about your feet tapping along.

Saturday Night Fever 17: Run-D.M.C.

Most rap/hip-hop remixes I've heard are straight-up awful. Producers increase the speed of the MC's flows to create an awkward dance track.

Without ruining Run D.M.C.'s "Hard Times," Victor Imbres mixes a roving dance beat over their legendary rhymes. It is filled with a catchy jumping bass line that is brought to life with hot Latin percussion. Sign up for Victor's mailing list to receive news on his upcoming jams.

Do you think Run D.M.C. deserves a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Tigersapien - Youth & Vitality (Designer Drugs Remix)

The Designer Drugs remix we posted on Friday was so tight, we knew that when we got another track from these dudes it wouldn't disappoint. Turns out, we were right.

This time they remixed Tigersapien, a foursome of gritty electro rockers. They say the track will let you "feel your face melt off your fucking skull," and we can't disagree with that.

"God Knows" is a track off of their new ep. It really shows how hard these guys can rock out--brace yourself for the breakdown.

Saturday Night Fever 16

Roger Martinez and Funkuz teamed up to bring you tonight's mamma jamma.

When two DJs from the Netherlands unite to make a crowd-pleaser, you get "Instigate." If you simply can't get enough of Roger, check out his online radio show.

Milke - Love Get Out of My Way (Designer Drugs Remix)

Can't get enough of Designer Drugs? We blogged about these dudes back in October, and have been rocking hard to their tracks ever since.

Milke is made up of Andrew Friendly, another Antler Darts favorite, and Ra. This is a remix of Milke's latest single "Love Get Out of My Way." It is a catchy track with an unforgettable hook. Get into it!

Emil & Friends - Tigerstripe (Remix)

A few weeks back we posted a funky jam from Emil & Friends.

I really dig their sound and couldn't resist posting this remix of "Tigerstripe," a track off of their upcoming spring album release. Emil set this track on fire by adding a dirty dirty synth line. Justice anyone?

Saturday Night Fever 15

In 1989, two Israelis banded together to form Astral Projection. These dudes churn out epic psychedelic-dance tracks, and have produced a grand total of 9 albums.

"Nilaya" demonstrates the group's abilities with a nine minute adventure of fast-paced dance music. For kicks, we added the remix.
